Genesis plans to attack the global market with twice as many models as it has now and all that within the next year.
As Hyundai has been building reputation over the past decade or so, it has garnered more trust from the buyers and it obviously can offer more expensive and more upmarket models.
In 2015 they created Genesis, a luxury daughter brand that shoots at the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. That’s a tall order, but judging by the Genesis we reviewed recently, it is not far off. For example, the G70 is very popular in the US with more than a 100% increase in sales in 2019 compared to 2018.
So, people are buying them and Genesis is taking notes.
This is why we are getting a lovely 2021 GV80 in October this year to attack the SUV market, the biggest and still growing segment of the automotive industry. While the plans for the GV80 are not really news, hints of a smaller crossover SUV based on the G70 is.
Genesis recently released heavily camoed photos of the GV70 crossover which, expectedly, pit it against the likes of the GLC and X3. If it gets the expected powertrain that mimics the one from the GV80, it will get a 3 L turbo diesel or a choice between two petrol, starting off with a 2.5 L turbo four-pot and ending with a 3.5 L twin-turbo.
The Genesis US CEO Mark Del Rosso also mentioned there would be an EV crossover as well. Information about the EV is currently limited to this one sentence, but having in mind the scalps that Genesis is after, we should be in for a treat.
If this is not enough, the all-new G80 is also slated for the next year. It is on the same platform as the GV80 and in a similar part of the timeline, so we expect some stylistic likeness as well. Looking at the GV80, that can only be a good thing.
