THE things people store in their garages . . . and forget.
Over in the US, a pair of Italian exotics have just been uncovered after lying dormant for more than 20 years.
The discovery appeared on the Reddit social platform, posted by someone identified only as ‘eriegin’ who opened his or her grandmother’s garage and found an 1981 Lamborghini Countach and a Ferrari 308 among the rubbish.
Eriegin’s grandpa apparently had an exotic car rental business back in 1989, but licensing and insurance costs became too high, so he parked his two beauties in the garage, and shut up shop.
“After insurance costs became too high for him to operate the company, he kept the car (and many others including the Ferrari 308…) outside/in leaky garages for 20+ years instead of selling them. Don’t ask me why. I have no clue.
“Despite the dust and rust, grandma’s 1981 Lamborghini Countach is the coolest,’’ the Reddit post says.
The result: dust that settled on the cars turned to mud after rain, and that, in turn, led to rust, staining of the interior and other negatives related to decades of neglect.
Still, the post generated nearly 200 comments and nearly 3000 ‘upvotes.’
The Lamborghini Countach 500S has a 4.8 litre V12 engine and is one of 321 built and the 1981 year of manufacture probably should read 1982, unless it was built in late ’81 for the 1982 market.
In good condition, it could be worth up to $700,000, but in its current state, well, let’s say somewhat less.
Nothing is known about the Ferrari, tucked away in a corner of the garage, its rear-mounted radio aerial decorated with an American flag and various bits of junk on top and around it..
Not that it it matters.
“Let’s clear some things up: these aren’t my cars and never will be, they’re not for sale (yet),” Eriegin said.
