What is it?
The Jimny is the genuine article in a market full of soft-roader pretenders. Ladder frame, live axles, low range and a 1.5L NA petrol making 75 kW. Two body styles in Australia: the original three-door and the slightly stretched five-door XL.
The lineup runs from GLX 3-door Manual at $33,490 plus on-roads, through to XL 5-door Auto at $39,490 plus on-roads. Warranty cover sits at 5 years, unlimited km.
Interior and Technology
Genuine ladder-frame 4WD with live axles front and rear, low-range transfer case, 210 mm ground clearance and 36-degree approach on the 3-door. Strong residuals.
3-star ANCAP (2018), no adaptive cruise, the 4-speed auto is slow and thirsty on highway runs.
Should you buy the Jimny?
Reasons to buy
- Genuine ladder-frame 4WD with live axles front and rear, low-range transfer case, 210 mm ground clearance and 36-degree approach on the 3-door. Strong residuals.
- Warranty: 5 years, unlimited km.
- 3-star ANCAP (2018), full driver-assist suite.
Reasons to wait
- 3-star ANCAP (2018), no adaptive cruise, the 4-speed auto is slow and thirsty on highway runs.
- You need modern safety kit (3-star ANCAP, no adaptive cruise), you want a real highway cruiser, or you want a usable boot in the 3-door body.
- Long supply waitlists at most dealers, expect to queue. The 3-door interior is tight, with rear seats that are essentially symbolic.
